Bode’s & Cigar Galaxies (M81 & M82)

Description:

Bode’s Galaxy (Messier 81; NGC 3031) is located in the constellation Ursa Major about 12 million light years from earth. It has an apparent magnitude of 6.94 and a diameter of about 96,000 light years. M 81 is grand design spiral galaxy and has an active galactic nucleus with a 70 million solar mass black hole.

The Cigar Galaxy (M 82; NGC 3034) is also in Ursa Major and is located about 12 million light years from earth. It is part of the M81 group, and has a diameter of about 40,800 light years. It is considered to be a starburst type of galaxy that are characterized by rapid star formation.
